Oman’s Maritime Security Centre (MSC) has issued a caution to vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz, following the sighting of a floating object suspected to be a mine in Omani territorial waters.
According to Ship & Bunker, an alert was issued by the MSC on Saturday, warning that the object was spotted west of the Inshore Traffic Zone in the Strait of Hormuz. The MSC urged seafarers, fishermen, and vessel operators to exercise “the utmost caution” when navigating the area, advising all maritime users to maintain a safe distance from any suspicious objects and to report sightings immediately to the relevant authorities.
Repeated Warnings in the Region
This latest alert is not an isolated incident. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had previously issued a separate warning on May 26 regarding another suspected floating mine in the same general area.
The back-to-back warnings indicate that mine-related hazards remain an active and persistent concern along one of the world’s most strategically critical waterways, despite ongoing efforts to maintain safe and normal shipping traffic through the strait.
Does This Matter to You?
The Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint through which a significant portion of global seaborne energy trade passes. Repeated mine sightings in the area — with two alerts issued within days of each other — point to a pattern of risk that cannot be dismissed as isolated.
Routing decisions, port call planning, vessel scheduling, and cargo commitments that involve the Gulf region are all potentially touched by this kind of maritime security development. Elevated risk in these waters can affect transit timelines, insurance conditions, and the cost and availability of bunkering in the broader Gulf area, including ports such as Fujairah.
The alerts serve as a reminder that situational awareness in this corridor remains essential for anyone with operational or commercial exposure to the region.
Gulf Bunkering does not provide operational or security guidance. This article is for informational purposes only. Operators should consult flag state authorities, P&I clubs, and relevant advisories for decisions relating to transit planning.
