Wah Kwong Accepts Delivery of LNG-Ready LR2 Tanker in Strategic Fleet Push

Hong Kong-based shipping company Wah Kwong has taken delivery of a new 114,000 DWT LR2 tanker capable of future conversion to LNG propulsion, marking a notable step in its fleet modernisation programme, according to Ship & Bunker.

First of a New Generation

The vessel, named Frontier Venture, was constructed at Hengli Shipyard in China and classed by Bureau Veritas. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the delivery represents the first in a planned series of SMART-enabled vessels for the Wah Kwong fleet — reflecting the company’s stated strategy to embed digitalisation and future fuel readiness across its operations.

EEDI Phase III Compliance and Smart Systems

Beyond its LNG-ready status, the Frontier Venture meets EEDI Phase III energy efficiency requirements. The vessel also features digitalised systems operating under Bureau Veritas’ SMART notation, a classification framework aimed at improving energy efficiency and overall operational performance.

LNG Readiness and the Bio-LNG Factor

Ship & Bunker notes that while LNG consists primarily of methane — a potent greenhouse gas — its overall emissions advantage over conventional marine fuels can be undermined by methane slip and upstream leakage. However, the source also points out that bio-LNG offers a lower-carbon alternative and can be used as a drop-in fuel in dual-fuel LNG vessels, with the potential to improve lifecycle emissions performance as supply availability grows.

The Frontier Venture delivery signals Wah Kwong’s intent to position its fleet for evolving environmental regulations and emerging fuel transitions.
