A laden Suezmax tanker was reportedly struck by an unmanned marine vehicle in Turkish waters on Thursday morning, in what could mark a significant escalation of maritime hostilities linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to Ship & Bunker, citing Turkish local news provider NTV, the tanker Altura was hit approximately 15 miles from the Bosphorus in the Black Sea on March 26, 2026. The vessel had loaded its cargo in Russia prior to the incident.
Explosion and Structural Damage
NTV’s report, as cited by Ship & Bunker, describes the strike as triggering a large explosion. The blast resulted in damage to the vessel’s bridge and caused water ingress in the engine room. No crew injuries have been reported at this stage.
A Potential Shift in the Threat Landscape
Ship & Bunker notes that maritime attacks connected to the Ukraine conflict have been relatively limited over the past four years, with incidents largely concentrated in Russian and Ukrainian waters close to their respective Black Sea ports.
The reported location of this attack — within Turkish territorial waters — sets it apart from previous incidents. As Ship & Bunker reports, an attack in Turkish waters, if deliberate, would represent an escalation in the conflict and a heightened risk for commercial shipping operating across the broader region.
