Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded type approval to emissions technology firm SeaARCTOS for its ARCTOS-1 device — a funnel-mounted system built to continuously track and report sulfur emissions from vessels in real time. The development was announced by SeaARCTOS in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
How the ARCTOS-1 System Works
According to Ship & Bunker, the ARCTOS-1 unit mounts directly onto a ship’s funnel and captures exhaust gas data as emissions are released from the stack. The device monitors both sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2), providing operators with a live view of their vessel’s emissions output.
A notable feature of the system is its automated cloud integration. Rather than relying on manual checks or self-reported figures, emissions data is transmitted directly to the cloud — giving shipowners and regulatory bodies independent, simultaneous access to the same information.
Lightweight and Fast to Install
SeaARCTOS highlights on its website that the ARCTOS-1 weighs just 3.5 kilograms and can be fitted to a ship’s funnel in under an hour. This positions it as a low-disruption retrofit solution for operators seeking to strengthen their emissions monitoring capabilities without taking vessels out of service for extended periods.
Tightening Regulations Drive Demand
The LR type approval adds a layer of independent credibility to the technology at a time when emissions scrutiny across the maritime sector is intensifying. SeaARCTOS has placed the milestone squarely in that regulatory context. “As global sulphur limits tighten and Emission Control Areas expand, continuous and independent monitoring will become increasingly important for both compliance and enforcement,” the company stated, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
