Liberian-Flagged Tanker Struck by Drone Attack in Russia’s Black Sea Waters

A commercial oil tanker has come under drone attack in Russian waters of the Black Sea, in what could represent a notable shift in the conflict’s impact on maritime trade, according to Ship & Bunker.

Attack Off Krasnodar Krai

The incident involved a Liberian-flagged oil tanker targeted off Krasnodar Krai on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Russian state news agency TASS, citing a Russian government source, reported that the attack was conducted using Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles. The vessel’s captain — a Turkish national — was reportedly injured during the strike.

A Rare Incident with Significant Implications

Ship & Bunker notes that commercial shipping in the Black Sea has largely been spared from direct attacks by either side of the Ukraine conflict since 2022, with only a handful of exceptions. Against that backdrop, this incident stands out.

As Ship & Bunker points out, any move toward targeting commercial vessels more broadly would represent a significant escalation of hostilities in the region — a development that operators and shipowners active in Black Sea trade will be watching closely.
