Explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG Facility Leaves Dozens Injured and 18 Missing

An explosion struck Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday, injuring dozens of people and leaving 18 individuals unaccounted for, according to Ship & Bunker.

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior confirmed the blast in a social media post, describing it as a technical incident at a factory within the Ras Laffan complex. The facility is home to a significant portion of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas production infrastructure.

Casualties and Search Operations

The Ministry of Interior reported a total of 54 injured persons as a result of the incident. Authorities have since launched active search operations to locate 18 missing persons.

“The Qatar International Search and Rescue Group of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), in cooperation with Civil Defence teams, is conducting search operations for (18) missing persons,” the Ministry stated, as cited by Ship & Bunker.

Timing Raises Concerns

The timing of the explosion is particularly notable. Ship & Bunker reports that the blast occurred as Ras Laffan was in the process of resuming operations following disruptions linked to the recent Iran conflict. The facility had not yet fully returned to normal activity when the incident took place.

QatarEnergy, which operates out of Ras Laffan, is responsible for approximately 20% of the world’s LNG output, according to Ship & Bunker.

Does This Matter to You?

Ras Laffan is one of the world’s most strategically significant energy hubs, and any disruption to its operations carries weight across global LNG supply chains. Given that the facility was already in a recovery phase following regional conflict-related disruptions, this explosion introduces renewed uncertainty around supply continuity from one of the largest LNG export complexes on the planet.

Routes, cargo schedules, and supply agreements tied to Qatari LNG may be subject to further delays or reassessment depending on the extent of any operational damage — though the full scope of the impact on production has not yet been confirmed in available reports.
