Shipping company Exmar has delivered a dedicated ammonia training programme to the marine assurance team of Woodside Energy, held over two days in Perth, according to Ship & Bunker.
Practical Focus on Safety and Operations
As reported by Ship & Bunker, the programme covered the practical side of ammonia handling and its use as a marine fuel, with particular attention to safety protocols, risk mitigation strategies, onboard systems, and operational procedures.
The training was initially developed by Exmar to prepare its own seafarers for the safe operation of ammonia carriers and dual-fuel vessels. According to Ship & Bunker, it is now being extended to industry partners as broader interest in ammonia as a bunker fuel continues to grow across the sector.
Supporting Woodside’s Marine Assurance Readiness
The sessions drew on Exmar’s hands-on operational experience, with the aim of supporting Woodside Energy’s marine assurance team in understanding how ammonia-fuelled vessels can be safely audited and operated. Ship & Bunker notes that the training comes as the shipping industry prepares for the wider adoption of low-carbon fuels.
Exmar shared the news in a LinkedIn post on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Exmar’s Ammonia Fleet Milestone
The training follows a significant fleet development for Exmar. According to Ship & Bunker, the company launched its first 46,000 m³ ammonia-fuelled vessel in July 2025, with the official delivery of that vessel anticipated later this year.
