Container Ship Struck by Unknown Projectile South of Iran’s Kish Island

A container ship sustained above-waterline damage after being hit by an unknown projectile approximately 25 nautical miles south of Kish Island, Iran, on Tuesday. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency, the vessel reported the incident at 00:45 UTC, as cited by Ship & Bunker. All crew members have been confirmed safe and accounted for, with no pollution or environmental damage reported.

UKMTO Confirms Strike and Damage

In a social media post, UKMTO stated that “the container vessel was struck by an unknown projectile, which has caused damage above the waterline,” as reported by Ship & Bunker. While the vessel sustained structural damage, the nature and origin of the projectile have not been identified at this stage.

The absence of casualties and the confirmation that there is no environmental impact offers some relief, though the incident raises serious concerns about navigational safety in the area.

Second Incident in the Region Within 24 Hours

This strike follows a separate maritime security event reported just one day earlier. According to Ship & Bunker, UKMTO also reported that a container ship at Khor Fakkan port observed multiple splashes in close proximity from unknown projectiles on Monday. The back-to-back incidents point to a deteriorating security environment in the waters surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Ship & Bunker notes that the incident comes amid ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran continues to threaten vessels attempting to transit the waterway.
