China Classification Society (CCS) has granted approval to a high-pressure direct-injection methanol single-fuel marine engine developed by the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI), according to Ship & Bunker.
CCS described the medium-speed engine as the first of its kind in China to achieve all-scenario approval as a high-pressure direct-injection methanol single-fuel marine engine, the classification society said on Thursday, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
Certification Details
Alongside the primary approval, CCS also issued a CN-2 emission certificate for the engine. According to Ship & Bunker, both certificates were awarded following extensive compliance testing across a range of operating scenarios, addressing both domestic Chinese standards and international regulatory requirements.
CCS stated that these approvals are intended to speed up the commercialisation and real-world deployment of the methanol engine technology, Ship & Bunker reported.
Broader Development Plans
SMDERI indicated it will continue to prioritize low-carbon propulsion research, with plans to use this certification as a foundation for advancing both methanol-only and ammonia-fuelled propulsion systems toward industrial-scale production, according to Ship & Bunker.
For its part, CCS said it intends to strengthen its collaboration with SMDERI on green, low-carbon, and smart shipping initiatives. This includes efforts to guide additional domestically developed new-energy marine equipment through the compliance approval process, Ship & Bunker reported.
