BBC Chartering Secures 5,000 tCO2e Through Ahti Pool to Meet FuelEU Maritime Requirements

Finland-based Ahti Climate has confirmed a new compliance partnership with BBC Chartering, enabling part of the heavy-lift operator’s fleet to meet its FuelEU Maritime obligations through an emissions pooling arrangement, according to Ship & Bunker.

The Deal at a Glance

As reported by Ship & Bunker, BBC Chartering will acquire 5,000 tCO2e through Ahti Pool under the agreement. Ahti Climate noted in a statement published on its website that a typical vessel is expected to require between 150 and 200 tCO2e to maintain compliance during 2026.

How the Pooling Mechanism Works

The Ahti Pool model operates by allowing participants to share emissions compliance balances across their fleets. Surplus savings generated by vessels that over-comply with FuelEU requirements can be transferred to vessels falling short of the threshold — helping operators sidestep financial penalties while keeping overall compliance costs in check.

Ship & Bunker notes that the pool already includes a range of established maritime operators, among them Van Weelde Group, Bore Ltd, Spliethoff Group, Stenersen AS, and energy company Neste.

Christoph Deters, Chief Operations Officer at BBC Chartering, explained the reasoning behind the decision: “After analyzing available FuelEU Maritime compliance options and assessing the costs and resources required, we have chosen to enroll part of the BBC Chartering fleet into Ahti Pool.”
