Avenir LNG and Anew Climate Complete First Joint Bio-LNG Bunkering Operation in Europe

LNG bunker supplier Avenir LNG and US-based Anew Climate have reached a significant milestone, completing their inaugural joint bio-LNG bunkering operation on European soil, according to Ship & Bunker.

Operation Details

As reported by Ship & Bunker, the fuel was loaded at the Port of Klaipeda and transported aboard the LNG bunker vessel Avenir Ascension to Sweden, where it was delivered to vessels operated by Swedish ferry company Destination Gotland. Anew Climate confirmed the transaction in an email statement issued on Monday, March 30, 2026.

For Anew Climate, the delivery represents its first bio-LNG bunkering transaction in Europe, with the company having previously conducted similar operations in North America, Ship & Bunker notes.

Fuel Compliance and Compatibility

According to the report, the bio-LNG was drawn from Anew Climate’s biomethane portfolio and satisfies the requirements set out under both FuelEU Maritime and the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III). Ship & Bunker also notes the fuel is compatible as a drop-in solution for vessels already equipped with LNG propulsion systems and existing bunkering infrastructure — removing the need for costly retrofits.

Industry Voices

“Greening shipping is not a future ambition — it is happening today,” said John Cosmo Dwelle, Managing Director of Anew Climate Europe, as cited by Ship & Bunker.

Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director at Avenir, added that the collaboration “strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, traceable Bio-LNG solutions, directly supporting our customers as they reduce emissions and progress on their decarbonisation pathways.”

Destination Gotland’s 2026 Outlook

Ship & Bunker reports that Destination Gotland has indicated plans to expand its use of bio-LNG throughout 2026, aligning its fuel strategy with the European Union’s evolving greenhouse gas emissions framework.
