The Spanish Port of Algeciras has announced it now ranks as Europe’s third-largest LNG bunkering port by volume, according to a report by Ship & Bunker. The port’s claim is based on 2025 figures sourced from Spanish gas association Gasnam, shared via a LinkedIn post by the port authority.
2025 LNG Bunkering Performance
Ship & Bunker reports that Algeciras supplied 333,833 m³ of LNG to vessels calling at the Bay of Algeciras throughout 2025, supported by a total of 78 ship-to-ship bunkering operations over the year. The port states this performance places it third in Europe, trailing only Rotterdam and Marseille Fos.
For context, Ship & Bunker also notes that Rotterdam — Europe’s leading LNG bunkering port — recorded sales of 992,911 m³ in 2025, representing a 5.5% year-on-year increase according to the Port of Rotterdam.
Bio-LNG and Supplier Activity
Beyond conventional LNG, Algeciras also recorded 51,923 m³ of bio-LNG delivered to ships in 2025, as reported by Ship & Bunker. The port’s LNG bunkering ecosystem involves a number of active market participants, including Axpo Iberia, Shell, and Peninsula, with Enagas playing a role in linking biogas production capacity to marine fuel demand.
Growing Iberian Bunkering Infrastructure
The wider Iberian Peninsula is also expanding its LNG bunkering capability. Ship & Bunker reports that nine LNG bunkering barges are currently operating across the peninsula, with four additional vessels under construction. Of the operational fleet, five barges are based at Algeciras, supporting demand from container ships, ferries, and car carriers using the port.
