Air Products’ Rotterdam Liquid Hydrogen Plant Surpasses 65% Construction Completion Ahead of 2027 Launch

Air Products has passed a notable construction milestone at its upcoming liquid hydrogen facility at the Port of Rotterdam, with over 65% of the project now complete and a start-up target set for 2027, according to Ship & Bunker.

Europe’s Largest Liquid Hydrogen Facility Taking Shape

In a statement published on April 1, the Port of Rotterdam confirmed that the facility is on track to become the largest liquid hydrogen plant in Europe. Once commissioned, the site will be woven into Air Products’ existing hydrogen network already operating at the port, enabling the company to reach customers across a wide geographic area — including Benelux, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, underlined the port’s role in the broader European energy transition. “As Europe’s largest port and a key energy hub, Rotterdam is committed to enabling the development of Europe’s hydrogen economy,” he said, as reported by Ship & Bunker.

Maritime Among Key Target Sectors

According to the Port of Rotterdam’s statement, the plant is intended to meet rising demand from several industries, including maritime, aviation, mobility, and industrial processing. The inclusion of maritime reflects an industry in the early phases of exploring hydrogen as a viable marine fuel.

Ship & Bunker notes that progress in maritime hydrogen applications is ongoing, citing the launch of a Japanese hydrogen-powered tugboat last year as one example of efforts to test the technology at sea.
