Maersk is preparing to demonstrate what it describes as the first ethanol bunkering operation involving a container vessel in the United States, according to Ship & Bunker. The showcase event is scheduled for September 15 and 16 in Mobile, Alabama.
According to Ship & Bunker, the vessel set to receive the fuel is the 9,000 TEU capacity Tangier Maersk, based on a save-the-date invitation seen by the publication. The operation would mark an expansion of Maersk’s ethanol bunkering activity, which has so far centered on European trials and feeder vessels, into a larger deep-sea ship operating in the US market.
Building on Earlier Ethanol Trials
Ship & Bunker reports that Maersk completed its first sailing on 100% ethanol earlier this year. That milestone followed a progression involving the feeder vessel Laura Maersk, which was first run on 10% and 50% ethanol-methanol blends before transitioning to neat ethanol. Maersk has since extended ethanol use to a larger dual-fuel boxship, according to the report.
Why Ethanol Is Gaining Attention
According to Ship & Bunker, ethanol has attracted increasing interest within shipping both as a standalone biofuel and as a complement to methanol, since the two alcohols can be blended in any ratio and stored within the same tanks. Marine engine manufacturer WinGD has described ethanol as a potential “game-changer” for the industry’s energy transition, the report states, pointing to its lower cost — around $600 per metric ton in the US — compared with substantially higher prices for green methanol, along with a growing available supply as electric vehicle adoption reduces demand for road-fuel ethanol.
However, Ship & Bunker notes that regulatory uncertainty remains. Current EU rules on crop-based biofuels exclude ethanol from qualifying as an eligible biofuel within the bloc. The report adds that this position is being actively challenged through a US submission to the International Maritime Organization, and that the EU has recently signaled it may be open to revisiting the rule.
