J-ENG’s Ammonia-Fuelled Engine to Debut on NYK Gas Carrier This November

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has confirmed that its ammonia-fuelled low-speed two-stroke marine engine remains on schedule to enter commercial service in November, according to an emailed statement from the company reported by Ship & Bunker.

The engine will be fitted aboard an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier currently under construction at Japan Marine United Corporation for NYK Line, Ship & Bunker reports. This vessel will mark the engine’s first entry into commercial operation.

Award Recognition and Development Background

J-ENG’s engine recently received the Marine Engineering of the Year award, known as the Dokou Memorial Award, for 2025 from the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering. The award recognised the engine’s contribution to advancing marine engineering technology, according to Ship & Bunker.

The technology was developed under Japan’s NEDO-backed Green Innovation Fund programme. Before reaching this stage, the engine underwent approximately 1,000 hours of single-cylinder testing, followed by a further 700 hours of trials on a full-scale prototype completed earlier this year, Ship & Bunker reports.

Performance Claims

According to J-ENG, as cited by Ship & Bunker, the engine achieves stable ammonia combustion at a high co-firing ratio while suppressing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The company states this results in a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of more than 90% compared with conventional marine engines.

Following the vessel’s entry into service in November, J-ENG says it will continue evaluating the engine’s durability and performance under real-world commercial operating conditions, Ship & Bunker reports.
