Peninsula Reviews Fleet Efficiency Technologies in Push to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Global bunker supplier Peninsula is conducting a broad review of energy-efficiency measures across its fleet, as pressure on the shipping industry to reduce fuel use and emissions continues to mount.

According to Ship & Bunker, Peninsula outlined the initiative in a statement published on its website, detailing a range of technologies and operational strategies currently under evaluation.

Technologies Under Evaluation

The assessment covers a diverse mix of technical and operational solutions, including:

  • Hull cleaning to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency
  • Oil purification systems and fuel injection improvements
  • LNG efficiency enhancements for vessels already operating on liquefied natural gas
  • Wind propulsion technologies, such as rigid sails for larger vessels
  • Voyage optimisation tools to streamline routing and reduce idle time

Ship & Bunker also reports that Peninsula is placing particular emphasis on improving fuel-consumption monitoring, especially for older vessels in its fleet that currently lack detailed sensor infrastructure.

Potential Savings

On the operational side, Peninsula highlighted weather routing and voyage planning tools as areas with meaningful savings potential. According to Ship & Bunker, the company indicated these measures could reduce bunker fuel consumption by between 5% and 15%, depending on vessel type and operating conditions.

A Practical, Measured Approach

Maria Angeles Lopez, decarbonisation manager at Peninsula, was quoted by Ship & Bunker as saying: *”Our approach is to assess a range of options and identify where they can make a practical difference across our operations.”*

The initiative reflects a broader trend across the maritime sector, where operators are actively exploring both technical retrofits and smarter voyage management to navigate tightening emissions regulations and rising fuel costs.
