Econowind Scales Up Wind Propulsion with Launch of New 30m 5-Series Ventofoil

Wind-assisted propulsion specialist Econowind has introduced a larger version of its suction wing technology aimed at deepsea vessel owners and operators seeking to lower fuel consumption and emissions, according to Ship & Bunker.

A Bigger Wing for Deeper Trades

The new 30m 5-series Ventofoil extends the company’s existing product lineup, drawing on the same engineering principles as Econowind’s established 3-series wing. The system is specifically designed to address the energy efficiency needs of vessels operating on longer, ocean-going routes. Econowind shared the announcement via an emailed statement on Monday, April 13.

Boomsma Shipping First in Line

Boomsma Shipping has been named as the first operator to take delivery of the new system, with installation aboard one of its vessels planned for this summer. The company is a returning Econowind customer, and Johan Boomsma spoke positively about the decision in the company’s statement.

“Wind propulsion has proven its value both economically and environmentally. With high fuel prices adding to the urgency, this is a logical next step for us,” Johan Boomsma of Boomsma Shipping said.

He also highlighted that energy efficiency sits at the core of Boomsma Shipping’s fleet strategy, noting that the company’s eight upcoming newbuild vessels will all be delivered wind-ready. The first of those vessels, Frisian Future, is scheduled to enter service in May, according to the statement.

Over 150 Units Sold

The product launch comes as Econowind reports a significant commercial milestone — the company has now sold more than 150 suction wings across multiple vessel types and trading routes, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
