Hong Kong Rolls Out Green Maritime Fuel Training Initiative for Shipping Professionals

Hong Kong has taken a meaningful step toward preparing its maritime workforce for a lower-carbon future, with the launch of a new training programme centred on alternative marine fuels. According to Ship & Bunker, the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) has announced its support for the ‘Training-the-Trainer Programme: Green Maritime Fuel for Sustainable Shipping,’ which got underway on April 8, 2026.

A Collaborative Effort Across Maritime Organisations

The programme is organised by the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board and delivered by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF) — a body led jointly by the International Chamber of Shipping, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and the United Nations Global Compact. Ship & Bunker reports that HKSOA shared news of the initiative via a LinkedIn post on Wednesday.

The opening session included remarks from Captain Lothair Lam Ming-Fung, representing Hong Kong’s Legislative Council.

Building a Cadre of Alternative Fuel Instructors

Hosted at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the three-day course draws participants from HKSOA member companies. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the programme’s central goal is to equip attendees with the expertise needed to serve as instructors in the safe use and handling of alternative marine fuels — with a focus on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has welcomed the initiative, characterising it as a timely contribution to skills development as the broader shipping sector works toward cleaner energy sources.
