CMA CGM Grows Methanol Fleet with Delivery of 13,000 TEU Vessel in South Korea

French container shipping major CMA CGM has taken delivery of another methanol-fuelled boxship, the CMA CGM Silver, according to Ship & Bunker. The 13,000 TEU vessel was officially named in South Korea, with the carrier sharing the news via a LinkedIn post.

New Vessel, New Route

The CMA CGM Silver is deployed on the trade lane linking Asia with the East Coast of South America, extending methanol propulsion capability to one of the carrier’s key international services.

Rapid Fleet Expansion

The handover of the CMA CGM Silver is the latest in a series of methanol-capable vessel deliveries for CMA CGM. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the company received the CMA CGM Carmen — a 15,000 TEU vessel — just last month, highlighting the speed at which the French carrier is scaling up its alternative-fuel tonnage.

Container Sector Leads Methanol Ordering

Ship & Bunker notes that the container shipping segment has been leading the charge when it comes to orders for methanol-fuelled newbuilds. The publication also points out that the growing influx of methanol-powered boxships entering service will place mounting pressure on ports to rapidly expand the availability of green methanol in order to keep pace with rising bunkering demand.
