QatarEnergy Tanker Struck by Missile in Qatar’s Territorial Waters

State-owned energy company QatarEnergy has officially confirmed that one of its chartered vessels was struck by a missile while operating within Qatar’s territorial waters, following an attack that occurred at 22:35 UTC on Tuesday, April 1, 2026.

The Attack on Aqua 1

According to Ship & Bunker, QatarEnergy identified the targeted vessel as the Aqua 1, a chartered fuel oil tanker. The company disclosed the confirmation via a social media post on Wednesday night, stating the tanker had been hit in what it described as a missile attack.

Ship & Bunker reports that two projectiles struck the vessel. One triggered a fire onboard, which was subsequently extinguished, while the second failed to detonate. The incident had previously been flagged by UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which reported a tanker being hit by two unknown projectiles off the Qatari coast before QatarEnergy’s official confirmation.

Crew Safety and Environmental Impact

Despite the severity of the strike, QatarEnergy stated that no crew members sustained injuries. The company also confirmed there was no environmental impact resulting from the incident, according to Ship & Bunker’s coverage of the social media post.

Regional Security Context

The attack on the Aqua 1 adds to a growing list of maritime security incidents across the wider Middle East region. As reported by Ship & Bunker, the event comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping operating in these waters.
