Chinese shipping giant Cosco Shipping has added a new methanol-ready vessel to its fleet, taking delivery of the 80,000 DWT multi-purpose grain carrier Guo Yun Hai, according to Ship & Bunker.
A New Addition Built for Flexibility
The Guo Yun Hai is designed to transport grain and a wide range of other cargo types. Cosco announced the milestone via a social media post, describing the vessel as combining cargo versatility, operational efficiency, and environmentally conscious design.
“Our 80,000 dwt multi-purpose grain carrier, GUO YUN HAI, has been successfully named and delivered, boasting standout strengths in professionalism, broad cargo adaptability, efficiency, and eco-friendly design,” the company stated in its post, as cited by Ship & Bunker.
Methanol Readiness Amid Industry Caution
The vessel has been built to allow a future conversion to methanol propulsion, though it has not been retrofitted for methanol use at this stage. As Ship & Bunker reports, this is a common pattern across the industry — a number of shipowners have ordered methanol-ready vessels, yet the majority of those delivered to date have not undergone the fuel conversion.
Ship & Bunker notes that this trend points to a broadly cautious stance within the shipping sector when it comes to committing fully to alternative fuel adoption.
